Satellite-Driven Insights for Urban Growth
Satellite imagery and proprietary algorithms for urban insights
The importance of urban growth
City form shapes how urban systems function. The arrangement of streets, buildings, and infrastructure affects efficiency, access to services, and social and economic outcomes. As cities expand, they generate gains in productivity and infrastructure efficiency, but they also intensify challenges such as inequality, pollution, and crime. These trade-offs make deliberate and coordinated planning essential.

The factors behind urban growth
Cities behave like organisms, as they emerge from countless individual and collective decisions rather than from a single overarching design. This bottom-up process creates diversity and constant adaptation as people shape their environments to meet evolving needs. Although overall patterns are difficult to predict, certain components are more stable.

Traditional economic frameworks often argue that urban growth is shaped by economic conditions that draw people and firms, demographic changes that increase demand for housing and services, and infrastructure provision that affects the accessibility of different areas. Land availability, housing regulations, and market conditions also influence the pace and direction of expansion, while public policies and governance frameworks establish the parameters within which urban development takes place.

Being aware of urban growth
Understanding how cities grow supports informed decisions across multiple roles:
For property owners, awareness of growth helps anticipate shifts in neighborhood characteristics that may influence asset values. It reduces uncertainty about zoning, infrastructure projects, and local conditions.
For business owners, growth data clarifies where demand may rise and which areas are suitable for expansion. It supports decisions about location, mobility, traffic patterns, and workforce distribution.
For entrepreneurs, growth insights highlight areas undergoing change where new products or services may find early adopters. They help estimate market size, identify potential customer segments, and allocate capital more effectively.
For NGOs, growth patterns indicate where social or environmental pressures may intensify. This supports targeted programs, better resource allocation, and evidence-based policy engagement.
For public agencies, understanding growth informs zoning, transportation, and infrastructure planning. It guides budget allocation and shapes regulatory and risk-management strategies.
Mapping Urban Growth with Satellites
At Transscalar, we leverage advanced technology to develop proprietary algorithms that allow us to observe urban growth directly and consistently.
Raster satellite data avoids the limitations of fragmented administrative records and infrequent surveys. By capturing entire regions at uniform resolution and on regular cycles, it delivers comparable snapshots of land-use change across space and time. This enables the detection of expansion patterns, informal development, and subtle shifts in the built environment that traditional sources often miss. By reflecting actual ground conditions and supporting repeated, large-scale analysis, satellite imagery provides a clearer and more reliable foundation for understanding how cities evolve.
Urban growth patterns identified by Transscalar in 9 cities worldwide (2022–2025 period; percentile-based)
The maps do not present scales that are comparable across cities. Transscalar’s proprietary tool uses Sentinel-1 satellite technology with 10 m resolution. Results were aggregated into hexagons for illustrative, city-level visualization.
How Transscalar Can Support You
We help property owners, businesses, entrepreneurs, NGOs, and public agencies make clearer, data-driven decisions by turning urban growth patterns into actionable insights. With proprietary algorithms and satellite imagery, we provide a consistent, territory-wide understanding of how cities expand, how neighborhoods evolve, and where meaningful change is occurring.
Our analytics reveal opportunities, risks, and long-term trends that traditional datasets often miss, allowing stakeholders to plan, invest, and act with greater confidence and precision.
